I started reading Creep last year when I picked up an ARC from a local bookstore. It was a rough start, getting used to the way Myriam introduces other narratives into the story she’s telling, but I’ve been actively reading it the past few weeks.
By the end of the collection, I was all up in my feelings. Feeling vulnerable and unsafe and concerned and hoping that Myriam is in a much better place now.
The stories are not particularly fun, because they deal with a lot of horrible and traumatic events, but Myriam’s storytelling is on point. She fully brings you into the story she’s telling and infuses humor into the narratives as well.
If stories of sexual violence easily trigger your own trauma, exercise caution when picking up this one. However, these are stories that need to be told and heard and believed.
I will say, the part that angered me enough to fully pause my reading was when Myriam’s HR Director questioned the domestic abuse allegations against Q because he was well-liked by his colleagues.
Rage.
Ultimately, I’m glad I didn’t give up on this one just because it took me a minute to get used to the writing style.
My September read is Catherine Gray’s The Unexpected Joy of the Ordinary. It seemed fitting for my birth month (yesterday was my birthday 🥳).
September is also when I do some evaluating and planning around my business, this blog, and my career (which is constantly one of the things I’m thinking about to be quite honest). So, we’ll see what new things come about as we head into fall (my favorite season, if you didn’t know).
Until next time… Happy Reading!
